Show your support for strong creek buffers in Santa Barbara!

SBUCC is proud to be part of a growing and diverse group of stakeholders advocating for stronger creek buffers in the City of Santa Barbara. The City is currently reviewing a draft ordinance (read it here) that will protect creeks and provide safety from erosion by keeping a buffer area between the creek corridor and new development. This ordinance has been a long time coming, and will catch up the City of Santa Barbara to the standard of creek protection set by other jurisdictions in our area. (For example, several years ago, SBUCC and our partners successfully campaigned for the adoption of a 100 ft creek setback ordinance in Goleta.)

Your voice is very important as someone who cares about Santa Barbara's watersheds, and we encourage you to show your support by signing the petition below that we are circulating along with our partners. These protections for our creeks will only become reality if the Santa Barbara community stands up for the creeks and urges the city to take action. We are also here if you have any questions about the ordinance, why creeks and creek buffers matter, or anything else about your local watershed. Please contact us at info@sburbancreeks.org if you'd like to discuss this further!

Petition is below.

The Issue

Santa Barbara's creeks are vital for community safety, ecological health, and climate resilience. Development near creek corridors has put people, water quality, and wildlife at risk from increased flooding, erosion, and pollution. Every other jurisdiction in our region has a creek buffer ordinance in place. It's time for the City of Santa Barbara to catch up.

Please join Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, The Environmental Defense Center, Santa Barbara Ventura Chapter Sierra Club, Santa Barbara Audubon Society, California Trout, Channel Islands Restoration, Southern Steelhead Coalition, CLAWS, Mission Canyon Association, Santa Barbara Flyfishers, Goleta Coast Audubon, SBCAN and Santa Barbara Urban Creeks Collective in supporting strong creek buffers in Santa Barbara.

Creek Buffers:

  • Filter pollutants entering our creeks, improve water quality

  • Stabilize streambanks, reducing erosion

  • Provide essential habitat for fish and wildlife

  • Mitigate flooding by absorbing excess rainwater

  • Enhance the natural beauty of our community

Creek buffers are a proven, natural solution to protect our creeks and the ecosystems they support.

I support strong creek buffers in the City of Santa Barbara to safeguard our environment and community for generations to come.
