Environmental Defense Center Creek Cleanups: Bringing People Together to Clean up Watersheds

The Environmental Defense Center’s (“EDC”) Watershed Program annual creek cleanups removed

10,877 pounds of garbage and recyclables in 2022. This work goes far beyond restoring streams and

protecting clean water along our coastline. Our creeks form a tapestry that weaves neighborhoods

together and cleanups bring together diverse groups and residents to create a tight-knit community.

Cleanups provide a fun, safe, organized outdoor activity for people to get involved and make a

difference. Volunteers discover and report pollution and dumping. Naturalists lead cleanups, identify

plants and wildlife, and talk about stream ecology so volunteers learn about local creeks. Cleanups

immediately benefit streams and inspire the next generation of creek stewards.

EDC collaborates with over a dozen diverse partners, including schools, churches, scouts, other non-

profits, the cities of Goleta and Santa Barbara, and the County. Bring your family, friends, and groups to

help us clean up local streams, learn about our watersheds, and have fun building a stronger

community.

EDC’s next cleanup is in Maria Ygnacio Creek on November 18.

Meet at 9:00 am at the corner of Ribera Dr. and Matorral Way.

Bring water, hat, sunscreen, closed-toed shoes, and long pants recommended. Latex gloves will be

provided.
